The Wonder

Adapted from Emma Donoghue’s novel by British playwright and screenwriter Alice Birch, this horror-tinged period piece sees the UK’s Florence Pugh play a nurse summoned to rural Ireland to observe a fasting young girl. Reminiscent of the mud-soaked Lady Macbeth, in which Pugh also starred, The Wonder packs a similar punch, delivered in a hushed otherworldliness.

Synopsis

In a rural Irish village in 1862, English nurse Lib Wright (Florence Pugh) is summoned to watch over an 11-year-old who is believed to have not eaten in four months, despite remaining alive and well. Lib must deduce, and perhaps convince herself as well as locals, whether the ‘divine’ is at work, or there is a scientific explanation.
