Dark River

British director Clio Barnard (The Essex Serpent) elicits towering performances from British actors Ruth Wilson, Mark Stanley and Sean Bean; a family contending with a violent past. This evocative, trauma-laden psychodrama uses a muddy and misty Yorkshire landscape to potent effect and while the story might be glum, in Barnard’s hands it’s beautifully-realised.

Alice (Ruth Wilson) returns home after 15 years to claim tenancy of the family farm, following the death of her father (Sean Bean). As Alice and her older brother Joe (Mark Stanley) clash over what to do with the farm, tensions arise and Alice must confront the reason she left in the first place.
