British actress Keira Knightley returns to the period drama, and to her very best, in this tragic, Atonement-esque tale of resentment, betrayal and new possibilities. British director James Kent films postwar Germany with glamour and intrigue, and the chilly atmosphere - both inside and outside the house - gives way to a decadent, swooning love story.
In the aftermath of WWII, a British colonel (Jason Clarke) and his wife Rachael (Keira Knightley) are sent to the ruins of Hamburg to assist in its reconstruction. As they arrive at their new home, Rachael learns that they will be sharing a roof with its previous owner: a German widower and his grieving daughter. Amid this tense atmosphere, a passionate affair begins.
