British actor Paddy Considine made his directorial and screenwriting debut with this bruising and kinetic kitchen-sink drama - filmed in Leeds - about the friendship between an alcoholic man and an abused wife. At its core: a trio of impressively lived-in performances from UK actors Olivia Colman, Peter Mullan and Eddie Marsan.
Joseph (Peter Mullan) is an unemployed widower and drinker, alienated by his furious temper. Hannah (Olivia Colman) is a Christian worker at a charity shop, whose husband James (Eddie Marsan) is violent and abusive. Despite their loneliness, Joseph and Hannah find a source of comfort in one another.
