Based on Vera Brittain’s WWI memoir, this lyrical yet brutal adaptation from British director James Kent is more than just a story of blighted romance and innocence, but a paean to the courage it took to survive. British actors Kit Harington, Taron Egerton and Emily Watson are reliably brilliant, supporting an exquisite lead performance from Alicia Vikander.

Synopsis

Aspiring writer Vera (Alicia Vikander) bypasses her parents’ wishes to see her married and wins a scholarship to Oxford University. Before enrolling, she begins a romance with fellow literary soul Roland (Kit Harington). But before they can fulfil their academic and romantic potential, they are plunged headfirst into war. Roland and Vera’s brothers ship out to the front and Vera volunteers as a nurse, witnessing first-hand the brutalities of a war that will change her life irrevocably.
