The Imposter

British filmmaker Bart Layton oscillates between drama and documentary to chronicle the chronically strange tale of con man Frederic Bourdin. Talking head interviews with Frederic’s family, and the family he tricked, are interwoven with reconstructions and home video footage to assemble a head-scratching and heartbreaking true-crime saga.

Synopsis

The story begins with the disappearance of Nicholas Barclay, a 13-year-old living in Texas who vanishes without a trace. Three years later, the boy is reported to have been found in Spain, having survived kidnap and torture. But when he returns to Texas, suspicions about whether the boy is really Nicholas begin to circulate. And if he isn’t the Barclay’s missing child, who on earth is he? And what really happened to Nicholas?
