Synopsis
Set in the first century, Mary Magdalene (Rooney Mara) flees a soon-to-be arranged marriage, finding sanctuary and a sense of meaning in a new movement led by Jesus (Joaquin Phoenix). As the only woman within his group of disciples, Mary takes on a patriarchal society as she becomes awoken spiritually and enters an unprecedented historical moment.
