Ali & Ava

Middle-aged, working-class love stories, suffused with tenderness and joy are a rare thing to behold and in Ali & Ava, British filmmaker Clio Barnard has created something bold and unique. Buoyed by a musical undercurrent and effervescent performances by British actors Adeel Akhtar and Claire Rushbrook, this is independent British cinema worth celebrating.

Ali (Adeel Akhtar) is a buoyant music enthusiast and landlord, struggling to move-on since his wife requested a separation, while Ava (Claire Rushbrook) is a caring teaching assistant and devoted grandmother. When a chance encounter brings them together, they develop a tentative friendship over a shared love of music. But as romance blossoms, will their past experiences and the disapproval of others threaten to keep them apart?
