BFI NETWORK
Made possible through National Lottery funding, BFI NETWORK exists to support and develop talented early career screenwriters, directors and producers. We collaborate with film organisations and leading cultural venues across the UK to provide funding for short films, support for the development of first features, as well as a range of professional and creative development programmes.

In partnership with the BFI and funds from the National Lottery, we offer grants to help Short and Feature filmmakers, and XR creatives, travel to international events where their work is being screened. Aesthetica
One of the UK’s largest film festivals, Aesthetica takes place across the historic city of York (a UNESCO City of Media Arts). The official selection includes a mighty 300 shorts alongside a selection of features, VR & Immersive, and is the first UK film festival to include Video Games as part of its public programme. They host conversations with leading industry such as Ridley Scott Associates, DNEG, Framestore, Aardman and more; as well as guest programmes curated by global partners. Aesthetica is BAFTA and BIFA Qualifying with all films eligible for ‘Best in’ category awards, craft awards and the festival’s unique Audible ‘Listing Pitch’ awards documentary grants of up to £30,000.

Bolton Film Festival is the largest short film festival in the North West of England and amongst the leading short film festivals in the UK. Attracting a diverse and vibrant audience of filmmakers, industry professionals, students and the general public, the festival opens its doors each October for five days of films, industry talks, pitching, networking and other events. Bolton is a BAFTA and BIFA qualifying short film festival, a BAFTA qualifying Animation festival and a member of the Short Film Conference - an international organisation lobbying for the rights of filmmakers. Renowned for its inclusivity and authenticity, the festival serves as a platform to amplify both emerging and established talent.

The BFI Doc Society Fund supports and nurtures independent non-fiction projects by UK filmmakers and artists, prioritising expansive, cinematic, innovative director-led storytelling, with funding for Features, Short Films, Research & Development, and Immersive work. Since 2018, the Made of Truth: BFI Doc Society Short Film Fund has proudly supported over 60 original, short documentaries. The fund will reopen in spring 2025 to discover new, distinct voices from across the UK. BFI Doc Society also supports UK non-fiction filmmakers with a year-round talent development and support programme.

Encounters is a globally renowned short film festival that takes place each September on the beautiful harbourside in Bristol, a UNESCO City of Film. Encounters is a qualifying festival for BAFTA, BIFA and the European Film Awards. Bristol’s spirit of radical independence is the foundation for an accessible and welcoming festival. Encounters was set up in 1995 to mark the centenary of cinema. In the 30 years since then it has showcased thousands of shorts, welcomed filmmakers and audiences from all over the world.

Festival Formula has 20+ years experience behind it after spotting a gap in the festival knowledge of filmmakers. Providing strategy support to filmmakers world-wide, they are a leading light and a trusted company. They're active members of the Short Film Conference and the Film Festival Alliance. Founder, Katie Bignell, is also a key spokesperson on festival issues with coverage in The Hollywood Reporter and Screen Daily regarding suspect and fraudulent film festivals. She co-created the Filmmaker Lounge in partnership with Film Festival Alliance – an online space for programmers and filmmakers to discuss their roles.

Ffilm Cymru Wales is the development agency for Welsh film. We are dedicated to advancing and sustaining a strong film industry for Wales; one that we can all be proud to call our own.
We do this by providing funding and training to emerging and established Welsh filmmakers, offering exciting cinematic experiences to audiences across Wales, and developing new skills and career paths for people through a range of training programmes. Recent credits include Chuck Chuck Baby, Unicorns, Kensuke’s Kingdom and Timestalker. Forthcoming productions include Brides, Mr Burton, Madfabulous and The Man In My Basement.

Since 2008 Glasgow Short Film Festival has been the leading short film event in Scotland. GSFF hosts an inclusive community of filmmakers and film lovers, showcasing ground-breaking works of visual storytelling. We nurture and inspire diverse forms of cinematic expression, in Scotland and around the world.

London Short Film Festival (LSFF) is the UK’s leading short film festival. Each January, the festival hosts ten days of short form, conversation and multidisciplinary curation. They present up to 500 British and international films, collaboratively selected from 5000+ open submissions, alongside Special Events and an industry programme of workshops, panels and discussion for filmmakers and cinema workers. The 23rd London Short Film Festival will be held in January 2026. LSFF exists to spotlight a multiplicity of filmmakers, visual artists and creatives, across intersections and with a commitment to peripheral voices.

Northern Ireland Screen is the national screen agency for Northern Ireland. We are committed to maximising the economic, cultural and educational value of the screen industries for the benefit of Northern Ireland. This goal is pursued through our mission to accelerate the development of a dynamic and sustainable screen industry and culture in Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland Screen offers a number of short film schemes across fiction, factual and animation for new and emerging filmmakers.
The main short film call is open on an annual basis and offers funding to individuals and companies in the fiction and factual genres. We also run a development scheme for underrepresented new and emerging filmmakers. Creative Animation scheme is open to junior animators working in animation studios locally to develop IP.
Scottish Documentary Institute
Scottish Documentary Institute (SDI) was established in 2004 to nurture documentary filmmakers and audiences, and to advocate for the unique and vital contribution of independent documentary to the film industry ecosystem and to our society. We believe in the power of documentary to spark critical thinking and to inspire positive social change, in a generous and thought-provoking way.
Through training, funding, inspirational events and distribution, we deliver a slate of development opportunities to benefit all Scotland-based directors and producers, and support them on a national and international level. We also offer a range of programmes to international filmmakers and we actively collaborate with documentary organisations around the world to champion and celebrate the art form.
Screen Scotland
Screen Scotland drives development of all aspects of Scotland’s film and tv industry, through funding and strategic support. Screen Scotland is part of Creative Scotland and delivers these services and support with funding from Scottish Government and The National Lottery. Screen Scotland has today (11/12) launched four film talent development initiatives designed to expand opportunities for filmmakers in Scotland to make short films or develop their first feature film: Short Film Development and Production, Early Development Shorts,Community Engagement Workshops, Feature Film Script Development.
